Congratulations to Grant Award Recipients

Congratulations to Ellen Gold and her team for receiving a $51,000 grant from the Michigan State Police. The award was the third highest-funded out of 19 applications, and will support the project, "EMU Men of Strength Creating a Respectful Environment (MOST CARE)."

Kudos to the following individuals for receiving a grant totaling more than $2.6 Million of the five year project period, to improve teaching for English language learners:

  • Sarah Lorenz, Professional Development Director, Department of English Language and Literature
  • Shawn Quilter, Associate Professor Department of Teacher Education
  • Zuzana Tomas, Associate Professor, Department of World Languages
  • William Tucker, Professor, Department of English Language and Literature

To accomplish the grant's goals, this collaborative team will develop and implement professional development for teachers and paraprofessionals, as well as conduct family and community literacy activities.

Faculty Professional Development Fund Established

Anthony and Lois Evans have generously established the James H. Brickley Endowment for Faculty Professional Development.

Lois Evans is a retired mathematics teacher. Tony Evans served in many administrative positions at EMU from 1975 to 1982, including Executive Vice President, Interim President, and Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Tony worked with former President James H. Brickley (1974-1978), for whom the endowment is named.

The purpose of the fund is to "facilitate faculty professional development and innovation through a broad range of activities, including but not limited to, things such as (1) reassigned time from teaching for scholarly, creative, and innovative endeavor; (2) conference presentations; (3) travel; (4) hiring of research assistants; (5) purchase of special equipment or supplies for teaching, scholarly, research, creative, or innovative activities; (6) development of a grant proposal for external funding; and (7) similar or related academic activities.

The initial endowment gift is $50,000. There is also a $10,000 gift to create an associated expendable account from which awards can be made during winter semester 2017. The endowment funds will be awarded through the Office of the Associate Provost/Associate Vice President for Graduate Studies and Research; please contact them at 734.487.0042 for more information.

Many thanks to Tony and Lois Evans, and to the EMU Foundation for bringing this project to fruition.
