The Faculty Senate is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards for tenure-track and tenured faculty. The awards are offered annually in the following categories: Teaching I, Teaching II, Research I, Research II, Creative Activity, and Service. Nominations will be accepted through January 21, 2019. Information on the nomination process and award guidelines are available online.
The Provost’s Office is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Full- and Part-Time Lecturers Awards to honor lecturers for their dedication to students’ education, as well as to demonstrate the value placed in full-time lecturers by the institution. The winners of these awards will be recognized at the Distinguished Contributions Awards Ceremony during Eastern’s Week of Excellence celebrations. The guidelines, deadlines and nomination forms may be found online. This annual event highlights graduate student research and creative activity and is an excellent platform for graduate students of all disciplines to share their work with the professional community. Chad Downs, a third and fourth-grade Advanced English Language Arts teacher at Ann Arbor Open School, is the winner of the $25,000 Milken Education Award from Michigan this year. Optimize Eastern, a student-led org at Eastern Michigan University, is looking for mentors from all walks of life to help out with workshops, small group mentoring, and 1-on-1 mentoring for students as they work on developing self-directed projects that make a positive impact in the world. The Optimize Eastern Challenge Program is an incubator for students to develop their projects with the potential to be awarded funding from the University. Student projects include initiatives in climate change, global hunger, education equality, medical innovation, sustainability, and more! If you are looking to participate in a 5K this spring, please consider registering for The Big House 5K: Trail to the Victors on April 7. $12 of each registration fee, and any additional revenue after covering race costs, goes directly to six non-profit organizations, of which Eastern’s Digital Inclusion is one. Digital Inclusion’s mission is to lead, educate and train low and moderate income youth and young adults in multiple areas of information technology, and by doing so, create community access to affordable technology, technology support and possible information technology career pathways for those individuals.
This event takes runners and walkers on a course through the University of Michigan campus and finishes on the 50 yard line of Michigan Stadium. It fills quickly so register early and show your support for this great program.
The 2019 Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy begins January 17. The theme of this year’s celebration is, “We the People: Standing Against Injustice.” We encourage all members of the Eastern community to participate in the academic programs, performances, and presentations throughout the week as your schedules permit.
