Rema Reynolds Named Morris Chair
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Rema Reynolds, Assistant Professor, Leadership and Counseling, on her appointment to the 2019 Michael G. Morris Chair in the College of Education. Her project is titled, “The Leadership Talent Development Project: A Partnership Between Eastern Michigan University and the Detroit Public Schools Community District.” We look forward to hearing more about this exciting work!
Distinguished Achievement Recognition Awards – Nominate Your Favorite Staff Person!
‘Tis the season to recognize and honor Eastern’s staff members for the contributions they make to our campus community. Nominations for the Distinguished Achievement Recognition Awards will be accepted from January 21 through February 6 via EAGLESYNC. The Distinguished Achievement Recognition Awards are divided into four categories:
- Student Engagement and Success Award
- Leadership Award
- Innovation Award
- Community Engagement and Service Award

Call for Nominations: Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards
The Faculty Senate is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the Ronald W. Collins Distinguished Faculty Awards for tenure-track and tenured faculty. The awards are offered annually in the following categories: Teaching I, Teaching II, Research I, Research II, Creative Activity, and Service. Nominations will be accepted through January 21, 2019. Information on the nomination process and award guidelines are available online.
Call for Nominations: Full- and Part-Time Lecturer Awards
The Provost’s Office is now accepting nominations for the 2018 Full- and Part-Time Lecturers Awards to honor lecturers for their dedication to students’ education, as well as to demonstrate the value placed in full-time lecturers by the institution. The winners of these awards will be recognized at the Distinguished Contributions Awards Ceremony during Eastern’s Week of Excellence celebrations. The guidelines, deadlines and nomination forms may be found online. Please share this information with staff, students, and any other appropriate people and/or committees within your department, school, or area.

The Graduate School is hosting the 2019 Graduate Research Conference (GRC) on Friday, March 22, 2019. This annual event highlights graduate student research and creative activity and is an excellent platform for graduate students of all disciplines to share their work with the professional community. Eastern Teacher Education Alum Receives Major Award
Chad Downs, a third and fourth-grade Advanced English Language Arts teacher at Ann Arbor Open School, is the winner of the $25,000 Milken Education Award from Michigan this year. The award is hailed by Teacher Magazine as the "Oscars of Teaching" and has been awarded for the past 30 years. Read more about this award winning Eagle here!
Mentorship Opportunities Available Through Optimize Eastern
Optimize Eastern, a student-led org at Eastern Michigan University, is looking for mentors from all walks of life to help out with workshops, small group mentoring, and 1-on-1 mentoring for students as they work on developing self-directed projects that make a positive impact in the world. The Optimize Eastern Challenge Program is an incubator for students to develop their projects with the potential to be awarded funding from the University. Student projects include initiatives in climate change, global hunger, education equality, medical innovation, sustainability, and more! New Employee Welcome Reception
All University employees are invited and encouraged to attend the next New Employee Welcome Reception on Friday, January 25, from 12:45 - 1:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor Carillon Room of Halle Library. Cookies, fruit, and punch will be served. This event is held three times per year to encourage current EMU employees to meet and interact with new employees who have joined the University in recent months. We hope to see you there!
Run/Walk to Support Eastern’s Digital Inclusion
If you are looking to participate in a 5K this spring, please consider registering for The Big House 5K: Trail to the Victors on April 7. $12 of each registration fee, and any additional revenue after covering race costs, goes directly to six non-profit organizations, of which Eastern’s Digital Inclusion is one. Digital Inclusion’s mission is to lead, educate and train low and moderate income youth and young adults in multiple areas of information technology, and by doing so, create community access to affordable technology, technology support and possible information technology career pathways for those individuals.
This event takes runners and walkers on a course through the University of Michigan campus and finishes on the 50 yard line of Michigan Stadium. It fills quickly so register early and show your support for this great program.
2019 Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration
The 2019 Celebration of Dr. Martin Luther King’s life and legacy begins January 17. The theme of this year’s celebration is, “We the People: Standing Against Injustice.” We encourage all members of the Eastern community to participate in the academic programs, performances, and presentations throughout the week as your schedules permit.
