Student Engagement and Success Updates

Apply Today!  Winter 2020 Academic Service-Learning/Community Based Seminars

The seminar's intention is to expose, engage and inform faculty on the study, research and application of integrating service and/or community into courses, curriculum, and scholarly and/or creative activity. For many, the seminar becomes both a point of access to practicing experiential pedagogy and to the value and impact of collaborating with the community. If accepted, faculty are provided a one-course release for the Winter 2020 semester so that they may participate in a weekly seminar. Scheduling of weekly seminars will be coordinated based on accepted faculty schedule. 

The application is available here and is due by November 20, 2019. 

COB Entrepreneurship Speaker Series Presents Robert Kraemer

The Entrepreneurship Speaker Series this month features Robert Kraemer, co-founder and principle of Kraemer Design Group focused on renovating older buildings with creative and exclusive designs. Kraemer will be in the College of Business Owen Building, Room 201 on October 16 from 4:30 - 6 p.m. to discuss his journey and answer any questions students have for him. This is a FREE event, but it's asked that students register at the series speaker registration link.  

Global Engagement Council Presents Campus 2 Career Retreat

Eastern’s Global Engagement Council is hosting a professional development retreat for global students on Friday, November 8 from 9 am to 3 pm in the Halle Library.  Led by Dr. Diana Wong, Director of the Center for Professional Development and Professor of Management, this retreat aims to assist global students in creating career plans and successfully adapting to American workplaces.  Please share this flyer [PDF] with your students.  For more information contact Shiri Vivek at [email protected].

 

High Performing Academic Programs and Quality Research Updates

Cabaret Premiers at Quirk Theatre October 18

Looking for a place to forget your troubles?  Come to Eastern's Theater production of the musical, "Cabaret" which premiers this Friday and runs through next weekend.  All performances will take place in the Quirk Theatre.  Quirk Box Office hours are Monday-Friday from 1 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and 90 minutes before show time. Please note that this production is recommended for audiences ages 16 and over.  Visit the Eastern's Theatre page for a complete performance schedule. 

October Gallery Show: The EMU School of Art and Design Lecturers

Thirteen part-time and full-time lecturers from Eastern will present their work for a group show at Ypsilanti’s Riverside Arts Center.  Artists in this exhibition are Suzanne Boissy, Lois Bryant, Beth Ogden, Eric Okon, Adam Ostrowski, Alan Potter, Dennis Ritter, Mayela Rodriguez, Traci Shipley, Robert Throne, Chris Untalan, Nora Venturelli and Ricky Weaver.  We hope you are able to attend and view the impressive array of creative activities in which our lecturers are engaged!

The gallery hours are Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 8 pm and the show runs through October 25.  All gallery events are free but a $5 donation to support Riverside and the expansion of their programs is appreciated. 

Statistical Consultations Available for Faculty and Graduate Students

The Office of Research Development and Administration welcomes back Dr. Grigoris Argeros, Professor, Sociology Anthropology Criminology; and Dr. Kathy Chu, Professor, Mathematics, as faculty associates for research statistics.  Consultation is available for faculty, as well as graduate students working with faculty on independent research projects with the goal of publication of results.

Service and Engagement Updates

Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, In Our Neighborhood Grant Program

There are countless groups and connections among and between the individuals who make up our community in Washtenaw County. These “neighborhoods” that we live in are both literal and figurative – some of us might be members of “neighborhoods” that are based on our vocation or social identity. “Arts and Culture” form the connective tissue that makes these neighborhoods thrive, allowing us to access our individual creative spirit, meaningfully connect with others, support economic activity, and give voice to our many and diverse experiences. The Ann Arbor Area Community Foundation, in partnership with CultureSource, invites proposals from interested individuals and nonprofits for ideas and projects that support arts and culture projects in your “Neighborhood” and have a positive impact on the local economy. AAACF is particularly interested in “Neighborhoods” that exist outside of the dominant narrative of Arts and Culture in Washtenaw County.  Read more about this grant opportunity and consider applying by the November 12, 2019 deadline.

NEW! Apply for the Social Justice Research Fellowship

[email protected] is delighted to announce the Kirk and Sharon Profit Social Justice Research Fund, a $3500 award for an individual or team of Eastern full-time lecturers, tenure track and/or tenured faculty to engage in public research focused on issues of justice (racial, gender, religious, economic, etc.). This award may also include some limited travel funding. The 2020 fellowship is in collaboration with EMU's Center for Jewish Studies. Gobble, Gobble!  Join us for the Thanksgiving Luncheon

The Thanksgiving Luncheons will be held Wednesday, November 20, 2019 and Thursday, November 21, 2019 in the Grand Ballroom of the Student Center Building. From 11:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. each day.

The cost to attend is subsidized by the President's Office, and remains only $6 per person. Tickets must be paid for personally, and no University Payment Card or departmental funds may be used. Individual tickets and tables of eight can be purchased at the Convocation Center ticket office in person, by phone at 734.487.2282, or online at the EMU tickets website. 

As part of Eastern’s tradition of making giving back a part of the Thanksgiving Luncheon, we have partnered with the VISION Volunteer Center to collect donations for SOS Community Services at the Thanksgiving Luncheon. To learn more about the amazing work SOS Community Services does in our community, please visit their website. As you consider donating, please consult the SOS wish list to inform your giving.
