Duties and Meetings of the Board

Responsibilities and Expectations

A member of the Alumni Board of Directors is appointed to hold the position based on demonstrated involvement, support, and commitment to Eastern Michigan University and the Alumni Association. In accepting this three year appointment, the member agrees to fulfill, to the best of their ability, the requirements and responsibilities associated with Board membership. Ideally, these include, but are not limited to:

  • Meeting Participation Expand dropdown
    There are four (4) regular Board meetings held each fiscal year. Attendance is expected to be in person for at least two (2) of the four (4) Board meetings. There is an option for teleconference attendance. All Board members are expected to attend the annual Alumni Awards Recognition, other Homecoming activities and alumni-focused events throughout the year.
  • Committee Participation Expand dropdown
    Serve actively on at least one Alumni Association Board committee and participate in the majority of the committee meetings held. Occasionally these meetings are held in conjunction with the Board meeting, but many are held at other times throughout the year. These meetings are usually held via teleconference.
  • Financial Participation Expand dropdown
    All Board members are expected to make an annual gift of $125. If you have an EMU license plate, this amount counts toward the annual gift requirement. Board members should determine if matching funds are available from their employer and initiate action to secure those funds.
  • Community Outreach Expand dropdown
    Become a representative and spokesperson in your community for Eastern Michigan University. This task may involve talking with prospective students, meeting with other alumni, attending local chapter events, speaking to local civic groups, and more.
  • Alumni Involvement Expand dropdown
    Assist the University and the Alumni Association in identifying, cultivating, and involving alumni in areas such as student recruitment, career networking, legislative advocacy, chapter leadership, identifying prospective donors, financial support, or more. Participate in Board sponsored initiatives.
  • Program Activity Awareness Expand dropdown
    Be familiar with the programs and activities sponsored, organized, and coordinated by the Office of Alumni and Donor Engagement.
  • Advice and Support Expand dropdown
    Serve in an advisory and advocacy capacity for the Alumni Association and provide active support of the Alumni Association through resolutions and Board advocacy.
  • Departmental Link Expand dropdown
    Serve as a communications link with your academic department to keep the department informed of Alumni Association activities and to encourage participation of faculty, staff, and departmental alumni in the Alumni Association.
  • Representing EMU Expand dropdown
    Represent EMU in a positive way. Avoids any misrepresentation of Board members own opinions as those of the Board. (Any personal opinions regarding the University expressed verbally or in writing or in electronic media that identify the author as a Board member will include a disclaimer clarifying that said opinions are not representative of the Board.)
