College Coaching Corps and Advise MI

New Tech High School in Ypsilanti, MI -- from College Application Week 2014 College Coaching Corps 

The College Coaching Corp program seeks to help more Michigan middle school and high school students pursue postsecondary educational opportunities particularly those students that are located in communities with low socio-economic status and low adult educational attainment rates. 

Eastern Michigan University College Coaches are full time (20 Hours a week) Graduate Assistants from programs such as HESA (Higher Education Student Affairs) and Counseling. Their charge is to support students as they make the transition from high school to postsecondary education. College Coaching Corps GA’s will focus their efforts on low-income, first generation students, mentoring these students through the complex and costly steps toward college enrollment or other postsecondary education options.

The College Coaching Corps’ is both funded and co managed by several entities including:

MCAN (the Michigan College Access Network), Washtenaw Futures (our Local College Access Network), EMU’s Office of Academic Service – Learning with support from the Graduate School and the partnership school district.  All coaches are trained at the state MCAN office where they are provided a year-long action framework focused on increasing post secondary understanding, access and engagement. Activities include: College Application Week, FAFSA literacy, College Readiness, and College and Career Fairs.
