Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship

The Black Faculty & Staff Association of Eastern Michigan University invites qualified students to apply for the Malcolm X and Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship. For consideration, applicants must meet the following criteria:

Scholarship Criteria:

  • Applicant must be a first Bachelor-Degree seeking student (exludes post-bachelors or graduate students).
  • Applicant must have minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above.
  • Applicant must complete an essay in response to the given prompt and supplemental questions.

Application Instructions:

Complete the application as indicated below.

  1. Provide a well thought out and well written personal statement advising the selection committee of the following:
    • Your campus involvement and/or community service as it relates to the social, educational, political and/or economic improvement of the black community.
    • How does the legacy of Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. relate to your campus involvement and/or community service experience?
    • Provide a statement on how you are currently financing your education at EMU.
    • 2 page minimum, 4 page maximum, double-spaced
  2. Optional - Provide documentation(s) (letters of support or references from authority figures) of your campus involvement and/or community service that relates to the social, educational, political and/or economic improvement of the black community.
  3. Submission Deadline: Monday, February 1st, 11:59pm

*Cumulative grade point average (GPA) confirmation will be reviewed internally.

Selection: A committee will meet in mid-February to review completed applications and select winners. Winners will be selected based on overall quality of submitted application, which may include academic standing, community and volunteer service, clarity of personal statement, strength of letters of support, etc.. Scholarship awards may vary, depending upon the number of winners selected; minimum scholarship amount is $250.
