Eligibility and Program Requirements

Eligibility

Eligibility requirements to participate in the Brotherhood and Sisterhood (BHSH) Scholars program are as follows:

  • Must be admitted to EMU as an incoming FTIAC (First Time in Any College) student of color
  • Complete program application and schedule program interview
  • All accepted participants must submit proof of completed FAFSA application
  • All accepted participants must read, sign and submit the Accountability Agreement

Once your completed application has been received, it will be reviewed.  Following our internal review, select applicants will be scheduled for an intake interview via Zoom.  The interview will include the applicant, the applicant’s parent(s)/guardian(s), and representatives from Academic Success Partnerships. The combined results of the application and intake interview will determine those students invited to participate in the program beginning this August.

Program Requirements

The Brotherhood and Sisterhood Scholars program requires participating students to engage in a number of program events and university courses designed to ensure a smooth transition from high school to college and promote a lifelong dedication to success.

  • Students must sign up for cohort designated sections of UNIV 101L3 (fall term) and LEAD 201 (winter term) during their first year
  • Early move-in to participate in an in-person Extended Orientation before the start of the semester. Students will live in the same room in Wise Hall for the duration of their first year.
  • Select commuter students must live 60 miles or less from campus
  • Participation in individual academic coach meetings every two weeks
  • Commitment to completing a minimum of 10 hours of study tables weekly
  • Attendance at monthly evening programs (Cohort Meetings, Sisterhood-specific dialogues and Brotherhood-specific dialogues)


Orientations

    During this orientation students and their parents/guardians will meet the program staff and go over key program elements (i.e., Overview of program, goals and expectations, Extended Orientation, Early move in and parking details) Staff will also answer any questions students and their parents/guardians may have prior to the start of the fall semester.

    *Attending this orientation is mandatory for both students and parents/guardians desiring to participate in the program.

  • Extended Orientation Expand dropdown

    The BHSH scholars program Extended Orientation allows scholars to move on campus one week early to get better acclimated to EMUs campus, culture and resources and to help increase student engagement and connectedness before beginning their first semester of college.

    *Attending and completing this orientation is mandatory for students desiring to participate in the program.


Residential Requirements

Participants who choose to live on campus are required to live in Sellers Hall within the Brotherhood and Sisterhood Scholars Living-Learning Community (LLC). *With the exception of Presidential Scholars admitted through the Honors College. Otherwise, participants who choose to commute must reside within 60 miles of the University.
