How to Join

Interested in joining Fraternity and Sorority Life?

Joining a fraternity or sorority at Eastern Michigan University can offer an individual numerous opportunities for growth and development. While there are also professional and honorary fraternities and sororities organizations, this site will help you understand and explore social FSL organizations.

The process for joining a social fraternity or sorority varies from council to council and organization to organization. Therefore, the first step for a potential new member should be considering what type of social fraternity or sorority they would be interested in joining. The Interfraternity Council is composed of only fraternities while the College Panhellenic Council is composed of only sororities. The Multicultural Greek Council is composed of both fraternities and sororities that focus on a specific ethnicity or multiculturalism in general, and the National Pan-Hellenic Council is composed of both fraternities and sororities that are historically Black. However, despite focus, interest, and historical founding, all are welcome to join these organizations.

Joining the College Panhellenic Council

The most common way to join a Panhellenic Council sorority is through a process called Primary Recruitment. Primary Recruitment will take place in the fall semester and consists of several days of events. During the first day, potential new members will have an opportunity to meet with every sorority on campus to learn a bit about their organization as a whole. The second day consists of two rounds; the first allowing potential new members to learn more about the organization's philanthropies, and the second giving a closer look at the chapter's sisterhood. The third day is known as Preference Ceremony where the organizations are able to share a bit about their ritual and their personal feelings from joining their sororities. During the fourth day, potential new members will receive their bids to join a sorority.

Some sororities will participate in open-bidding after the primary recruitment process and during the Winter Semester. During open-bidding, sororities will host their own informal events that allow potential new members to meet a sorority and their members. The best way to find out about these events is to visit the organizations on EagleSync or follow them on social media.

Fall 2023 Primary Recruitment will begin on  September 5th. Click here to sign up.

Joining the Interfraternity Council

Men interested in joining a fraternity in the Interfraternity Council join through a process called open-bidding. Through this process, each fraternity hosts their own informal recruitment events. These events may occur in either semester and provide an opportunity for the fraternity members and potential new members to interact. The best way for potential new members to find these events is to visit the organizations EagleSync page or follow them on social media.

Joining the National Pan-Hellenic Council

Students interested in joining a National Pan-Hellenic Council organization participate in a process called intake. NPHC organizations host a number of various events throughout the school year that introduce students to their different organizations. Each fraternity and sorority in the NPHC takes in new members at different times and through different processes. Interested students should visit the organizations EagleSync page as well as social media to find information on upcoming events and contact the group they are interested in for more information.

Joining the Multicultural Greek Council

Students interested in joining the Multicultural Greek Council will also participate in a process called intake. Each organization within the Multicultural Greek Council will hold their own recruitment events and hold their own individual requirements for membership. Students interested in joining a MGC organization should either attend a MGC sponsored event to learn more about the council as a whole, or visit an organizations EagleSync page or social media to find information on upcoming events and contact the group you are interested in.
