Welcome

The Center for Adaptive Technology in Education (CATE Lab) was designed to assist students with disabilities incorporate computers and technology into the learning and working atmosphere of Eastern Michigan University (EMU). Successful integration of adaptive technology enables the user to participate in all aspects of the higher educational environment.

The CATE Lab provides students with technology evaluations to determine how adaptive technology can improve their learning or working environment.

We also provide individualized and group training on adaptive technology through online instruction, webinars and workshops at the CATE Lab. There is no charge for usage of the CATE Lab.

Mission of the CATE Lab

The CATE Lab provides resources, evaluations, and training in adaptive technology for students with disabilities. Our goal is to assist with developing, assessing and implementing assistive technology to enable those with disabilities to participate in their educational and vocational environments at their maximum potential. Further, the CATE Lab seeks to provide an accommodations driven testing environment for the campus that enables test takers with disabilities to perform at their maximum ability.

History of the CATE Lab

The CATE Lab began in 1991 with the goals of providing adaptive technology education to both students, staff and faculty with disabilities and as a training site for special education majors. In time, an additional training site for education majors was developed and the CATE devoted its resources toward those with disabilities. Over the years the CATE Lab has become the site for students with disabilities testing outside of the classroom. Exam accommodations increase each year and include computerized readers, voice recognition, large print software, specialized keyboards, adaptive software and hardware, extended testing time and the use of human readers and scribes. At the same time, CATE remains the focal point for adaptive technology training, evaluation and demonstrations for those with disabilities on EMU’s campus.
