Professional Summary

Dr. Hawkins has 20 years of social work practice experience with children and families.  She has a diverse range of experiences in the areas of juvenile justice, homelessness, literacy, family services, and education.  Her areas of interest include marginalized youth, educational equity in K-12 public schools, and culturally responsive pedagogical practices.  She has served in various capacities as a practitioner and administrator in nonprofit organizations, public schools, and universities. Dr. Hawkins is a member of Michigan’s Department of Education Achievement Gap Critical Friends Workgroup in Lansing, Michigan and further contributes to the community through advocacy and volunteerism in various programs and agencies in Washtenaw County. She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and American Education Research Association (AERA).  She has a clinical and macro social work license in the state of Michigan.

Recent honors include being awarded the prestigious William Fennel Symposium Mentor of the Year Award (2018), McNair Scholars Faculty Mentor of the Year Award (2018), Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Role and Status of Women in Social Work Education Mentor Award (2017), Thank a Teacher Award (2017), Symposium Undergraduate Research Fellow Award, Faculty Mentor (2017), Scholars of Excellence Award from the College of Education department of Teacher Education (2013), and Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from the College of Health and Human Services department of Social Work (2011) at Eastern Michigan University.
