Professional Summary

Dr. Loppnow has expertise in the fields of child welfare, juvenile justices, and gerontology.  In recent years his interest have been primarily in macro practice.  He has published and given papers in these areas.  His scholarship also includes papers and publications on strategic planning and continuous improvement.  He is a successful grant-writer having personally authored and co-authored numerous funded projects.  Prior to pursuing a career in higher education, he had seven years of social work practice experience in juvenile justice, child welfare, and adult services in agencies in New York and Wisconsin.

Dr. Loppnow joined the faculty at EMU in 1974, was named the first department head when the Department of Social Work was formed in 1981 and served in that role for fifteen years.  He then spend fifteen years in leadership roles in the University's central administration.  He has served as Director of the Office of Research Development, Associate Vice President for Extended Programs, Assistant to the President for Strategic Planning, Senior Executive for Strategic Planning and Continuous Improvement, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, Executive Vice President and Provost, and Vice President for Advancement and Executive Director of the EMU Foundation.  On two occasions he fulfilled duties as interim President of the University, most recently during the 2007-028 academic year.  He returned to the faculty in the School of Social work in January 2011.

Dr. Loppnow was selected as an American Council on Education ACE Fellow during the 1990-91 academic year and spent the year working as an assistant to the President of Western Michigan University.  He has received numerous awards recognizing professional accomplishments.

Dr. Loppnow currently serves on the boards of directors of several community organizations.
