Academic Program

Computer Information Systems (CIS) [BBA] - this program integrates theoretical concepts with hands-on learning, equipping students to analyze, design, and manage information systems for real-world applications. The curriculum emphasizes both technical expertise and critical problem-solving skills, meeting the demands of today’s technology-driven workplaces. Students will gain a robust understanding of how technology drives business success, enabling them to become valuable assets in various industries. Courses cover topics such as:

Computer Information Systems Minor (for Non-Business Majors) - Non-business majors are with an interest in computer information systems are encouraged to pursue this minor or an undergraduate certificate in one of the following disciplines:

Business Analytics [Undergraduate Certificate] -  This certificate provides students with the specialized knowledge and skills needed to design, develop and maintain a database, data warehouses, and to visualize and present data in meaningful ways. Topics of study include:

  • Data Warehousing
  • Data and Web Content Mining
  • Business Data Modeling and Visualization

Web and Mobile Technologies [Undergraduate Certificate] - In this program, students will gain the specialized knowledge and skills needed to design, develop and maintain websites and mobile applications. Topics of study include:

  • Web Page Development
  • Social Media Networks
  • Business Mobile Application Development

Students who are interested in transferring to the Information Systems program are encouraged to visit Transfer Partnerships for a list of articulation agreements.

The Graduate program in Information Systems emphasizes strategic decision-making and leadership skills in managing complex information systems. Information Systems [M.S.] - Students can choose a general concentration or specialize in either Business Analytics or Web and Mobile Technologies. The MSIS program qualifies as a STEM designated degree, which is particularly advantageous for international students. As a STEM program, graduates are eligible for an Optional Practical Training (OPT). Program topics include:

Student Activities and Involvement

  • CIS Club

    CIS Club is a student organization for the CIS/MIS/IS students in the College of Business. Unlike ISACA (see below), it includes all the areas of IT such as computer networking, programming, database, security, web design, business analytics, AI, and enterprise systems and more.  The major activities include inviting speakers from industries, posting job opportunities, and serving a social networking organization for IS students.   • Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA)

    ISACA - EMU is a student branch/organization from the Information Systems Audit and Control Association (ISACA), an international professional association focused on information technology governance. ISACA currently offers 8 certification programs (such as CISA), as well as other micro-certificates. The student members of ISACA are from information systems, accounting information systems, accounting majors or any other students interested in Information audit and security.  ISACA Detroit Chapter sponsors a scholarship competition every year and EMU students have won 3rd place almost every year in the last eight years.
