Tell us about your experience here at Eastern Michigan University:

“In one word, amazing. When I arrived at EMU, I had recently moved from Florida, I was unemployed, my mother had totaled my car, and I couldn’t even get an apartment so I can attend school. [Three years later] I left with two master’s degrees and offer for full-time employment from a fortune 50 technology firm. I can honestly say the experiences I had at EMU helped shape me into the man I am today. The problem-solving skills I learned, such as critical thinking and logical reasoning continually help me today in both work and life events. I learned  the obstacle truly is the way from the challenges faced at EMU. From starting school part-time, with student loans and no transportation, to becoming a full-time student and earning a graduate assistantship, EMU provided challenges to prepare me for life and I will be forever grateful.”

Did you have a favorite professor and why:

“My favorite professor was Dr. Lee. He has such a calm disposition and really cares about his students.  I really liked how he challenged me, but in a manner which I could use the lessons outside of school. I suppose I am trying to say, he challenged me intellectually, and I also use most of what he made me read and practice in class every day. The challenges he provided translated to workplace success for me , while he still left me feeling like he cared for me . I know in school some of the material can seem like it will not translate to the real world, but not with Dr. Lee.  Here is an example, when I am done typing this for EMU, I am going to use the skills learned in Dr. Lee’s IS strategy class to craft a strategy to grow users for products my team develops. In fact, I regularly open my textbooks to pages he made us study, so I can prepare for work.”

What was the most useful class for you:

“The most useful course for me was Systems Analysis and Design. I use the knowledge gained in that class everyday at work. I would also add IS strategy as another great class with many of the projects and assignments directly translatable to the workplace.“

What advice would you give to anyone considering EMU from your hometown?

“Well, my hometown is a tricky one. I was born in Ghana but lived in Michigan most of my life. I would advise anyone student serious about their education to consider EMU.  The professors care about the success of their students; moreover, the challenges faced at the university can prepare anyone for what comes after school. The job offers will come if you just learn the material. Just go and learn.”

I credit the person I am today to the experiences I had at EMU. I will 100% maintain contact with the school. Eventually, the skills I gained will translate into the ability to setup a scholarship fund, so I can help any enterprising student face the challenges of learning to solve problems.”
