Welcome to the College of Education at Eastern Michigan University!
The college traces its roots back to EMU's founding as the Michigan State Normal School in 1849. In 1959 the educator preparation programs came together to form the College of Education. Over the years, our educator preparation programs have maintained reputations for excellence throughout Michigan and around the world. We have been accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) since its inception in 1954 and will continue our accreditation with the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) at our review in 2017. Our speech pathology program is accredited by the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) and our school counseling program is accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling & Related Educational Programs (CACREP). Our education programs in health, world languages, special education, educational leadership, reading, educational media and technology, early childhood, English language arts, mathematics, TESOL, and the sciences have been evaluated by their respective professional associations and recognized nationally as high-quality programs.
Today's college is focused on preparing educational professionals who are ready to meet the challenges of the 21st century. Our mission is to be a globally recognized leader in preparing professionals who individually and collectively provide leadership and exemplary education and related services for the betterment of a changing and complex global society. We are a community of teachers and learners who practice education within a context of collaboration, community engagement, and shared governance. We seek equity and social justice in all of our work. We create learning communities that are inclusive and foster the development of excellence and integrity for educational professionals. We value urban education and support diverse learning communities.
The preparation and development of educational professionals is our history, our present, and our future. Thousands of Michigan's finest teachers, counselors, school administrators, and speech pathologists have graduated from our programs and some have been recognized for excellence in the form of National Teacher of the Year, Michigan Teacher of the Year, Milken Education Awards, and other local, professional, and state awards. We are proud of the positive influence we have on education. We celebrate the accomplishments of our faculty, staff, and most of all, our students and alumni.
