Dave DeVries joined the EMU College of Education Family in January of 2019. Dave came from Western Illinois University where he worked with pre-clinical student teachers initially, then supervised student teachers, often in distant learning sites. Dave helped with the implementation of the edTPA, which became the only certification process in Illinois. Dave assisted the History Department at his previous university, teaching the methods course for the history department for several semesters.
Dave, originally from Kalamazoo, worked in many areas prior to attending college, where he studied history, with the plans of becoming a secondary educator. It was when placed in a middle school as a student teacher where Dave developed a passion for working with this particular age group. While teaching middle school for ten years, Dave was recognized by students from the National Honor Society twice as a distinguished teacher in the district. Dave earned an M.A. in middle school education through Western Michigan University, and eventually an M.A. in history through Eastern Michigan University.
Dave has always been a student-centered educator and brings this same mindset to the position of student teaching coordinator. In this role, Dave will focus on student teaching placements, work also with the clinical experiences aspect of student teaching, acting as one of the primary liaisons between the College of Education and the local districts in which students are placed.
