Updates from the Office of Urban, Community, and International Outreach

The College of Education's (COE) Office of Urban, Community, and International Outreach (OUCIO) has sponsored several activities over the past few months. The following is a brief wrap-up of their activities:

• Fourteen COE undergraduate students received the Road to Completion Scholarship in the amount of $2500 for winter term. The recipients are: Ishmaayil Bell, Tiran Burrell, Krystal Bush, Courtney Caldwell, Malcolm Childs, Bamiji Ibionke, Deanna Irvin, LaRaina Johnson, Kortrez King, DeShaun McKeithen, Courtney Morris, Joshua Shaw, Carlon Tedford and Brandon Terrell. These students are all undergraduates from the city of Detroit with 110 credits or more. A luncheon will be held in their honor on April 23 to celebrate graduation for many of them.
• The John W. Porter Distinguished Chair in Urban Education committee made their recommendations to the Dean of the COE for the selection of the 2015-16 John W. Porter Distinguished Chair in Urban Education. Dr. Ethan Lowenstein, professor in EMUs Department of Teacher Education was appointed as the Chair. The committee also reviewed and made their recommendations for the Porter Student Scholarship awards. Five EMU undergraduates will receive awards ranging from $500 to $1500 for the Winter semester. The recipients are: Kaia Bishop, Nigora Erkaeva, Veronica Konglim, Donald LeFlouria and Monica Shields-Grimason.
• The College of Education has awarded the Travel Fund Scholarship to Mina Baxter, who is an EMU student currently teaching in Korea with the TaLK program. The fund is set up to help pay for travel expenses in a study abroad program.
• A group of eight EMU undergraduate students departed for Korea to serve as tutors and classroom assistants in multiple elementary schools throughout Korea as part of the Teach and Learn in Korea (TaLK) program. The students are: Mini Baxter, Ryanne Cleggett, Amariah Carter, Erin Uhrick, Elise Hiskens, Connor Phelps, Mathew Moyer and Betty Adams. The TaLK program is expected to conclude in 2016.
• Two visiting scholars, Qin Li and Xinhua Shi, from China Three Gorges University, located in Yichang, China arrived on campus in January. They will conduct research on teaching English and developing a curriculum while at EMU. Pat Williams-Boyd (professor, teacher education) is serving as their mentor.
