By selecting the Elementary Education Social Studies Comprehensive Major, you will earn a Bachelor of Science that leads to a K-5 elementary education teaching certificate. You will also be eligible to earn the State of Michigan Elementary Social Studies (RX) endorsement. This indicates that you have specialized expertise in Social Studies and qualifies you to teach Social Studies in grades 6-8.

What You Will Learn

In addition to the elementary curriculum, you will study geography, American and world history, economics, and political science. You will also learn to plan and execute child-centered learning experiences for children in grades K-5.

Certified teachers with the Elementary Social Studies (RX) endorsement can teach grades K-5, all subjects as well as grades 6-8 self-contained classrooms, and 6-8 Social Studies. By pursuing this major you will have the social studies knowledge and training to take a leadership role in social studies education at the elementary and middle school levels. Teaching social studies at the middle school level is also a very rewarding profession. In either case, you will have the opportunity to get students excited about social studies at an early age.
