The Post-Master’s Certificate in Clinical Mental Health Counseling provides opportunities for counseling program graduates to gain the knowledge and skills for working in community-based mental health centers, hospitals and other treatment centers, and private practice.

What You Will Learn

You will learn theories and techniques for counseling in community-based treatment settings as well as ethical, legal and professional issues in clinical mental health counseling. You will expand your reach from your previous master’s education in counseling by taking courses that provide advanced competencies necessary to work with clients presenting with a range of mental and emotional disorders as well as the skills necessary to promote mental health and wellness. In addition, you will engage in an intensive 300-600 clock-hour supervised counseling internship experience within the clinical mental health field.

Opportunities

Upon completion of this program, students will have gained the advanced clinical competencies necessary to work with clients in a range of community-based mental health settings. The certificate program provides additional training for graduates of 48-semester hour counseling programs who seek employment in states that require 60 credit master’s degrees. This post-master’s certificate program does not meet the academic and internship requirements for limited licensure as a professional counselor (LLPC) in the State of Michigan and cannot be used to supplement a previous master’s degree to become eligible for the LLPC. Information on requirements to become eligible for licensure as a professional counselor is available in the Student Handbook for Counseling Programs.
