The Master of Arts in Reading program provides students with a strong theoretical foundation in the field of reading and literacy, as well as skills needed to address the needs of K-12 learners, particularly those who require specialized literacy intervention.

What You Will Learn

You will learn of a wide range of instructional and assessment policies, programs, practices and resources supporting literacy development. You will design literacy environments that engage learners in inquiry, research and communication, using print and online texts as well as new and emerging technologies. Additionally, you will gain knowledge and expertise that enables you to work successfully in culturally and linguistically diverse K-12 settings.

Opportunities

Successful completion of The Master of Arts in Reading and additional state testing requirements leads to the Reading Specialist (BR), a K-12 endorsement from the State of Michigan. The Master of Arts in Reading and the State of Michigan endorsement as a K-12 Reading Specialist can lead to a position as a building or district literacy curriculum/reading specialist, literacy coach, or teacher for struggling readers.
