Via Support

The College of Education has used an online portfolio and assessment tool, formerly LiveText - and now Via, since 2006.

Students use Via for online portfolios and for submitting assignments for specific courses.

Faculty use Via for assessment of student learning outcomes and to provide formative feedback to students - both of which are key components in our continuous improvement cycle.

The College of Education uses Via for college-level reflection on programs we offer, as well as reporting on student learning for national accreditation purposes.

Accessing your account

Students seeking teacher certification, and those seeking administrator certification, will need to purchase a Via account, depending on the specific needs of their program. There may be courses outside of those two groups which also require a Via subscription. Do not purchase a Via account until told to do so by your instructor.

To log into your Via account, even for the first time, visit Via to sign in.

If you have not had an account previously, the system will prompt you to set up your account. First-time account setup will require a credit card. New accounts are good for seven years.

To use your Via account in the future, use the login link above.

If you previously held a LiveText account, you may still access information in that account by logging in with your LiveText account login information.

See the FAQ’s, below, for additional information.

My faculty member told me I needed Via (or LiveText). How do I get it?

Visit the Via site and log in using your EMU login info, and follow the prompts to set up your account.

    Why do I need Via?

Students use Via for electronic portfolios and for assignment submission for assessment of student learning outcomes. Faculty use Via for collection of assessment artifacts (student work), and for assessing that work against EMU, State, and accrediting-body standards. Programs use Via to understand how we are meeting your needs, evaluating what has been done, and making adaptations based on that new knowledge. This is all part of our continuous improvement process. And finally, the College, and individual departments and programs, use the assessment of student learning outcomes to demonstrate we are meeting the goals our various accrediting bodies hold us to. In doing so, we maintain our high standards, and the Michigan Department of Education recognizes each of our accredited programs, recognizing us for what we do best: Preparing Caring Professional Educators for a Diverse and Democratic Society.

I already have a LiveText account. Do I need to buy a Via account?

No. Because you have a LiveText account, you now also have a Via account, with the same expiration date as your LiveText account.

I have a LiveText account from another school. Do I need to buy a new account while at EMU?

No. You should call the company, Watermark, and ask them to move your account to the Eastern Michigan University domain.

I see the name Watermark on the website. What is that?

Watermark is the name of the parent company of the product we call Via.

How can I get this billed to my student eBill account?

Due to changes in pricing, you must supply a credit card for purchase. In the past, there had been a discount available if you acquired your license through EMU. There is no longer a discount available to us for us to pass along to you.

If I drop my class, can I get a refund?

Your purchase and use of your Via account is subject to the Via Terms of Service. As of this writing, a user may get a refund if the account is less than 30 days old, and if the account has not been used.

Do I have to purchase Via each semester?

No. Accounts are good for seven years, unless the Via terms of service spells out a different subscription length.

I have a LiveText account. Will all of my work move over to Via?

Your LiveText work will remain in the older LiveText system. Any work submitted within Via will be available there.

How long will my account last?

All accounts are covered by the Via/Watermark terms of service. As of this writing, new accounts are good for a period of up to seven years. Older accounts were good for a period of up to five years. Upon expiration, the next time you log into your account, you will be prompted to renew for a shorter period of time.

My account is expiring, or has expired. How do I renew?

All account renewals are handled directly by Watermark. During the 30 days leading up to your account expiration, you will be prompted to renew each time you login. After your account has expired, you will only be able to see the renewal screen upon login. You may then choose to renew for as little as one year, or as long as seven years.

Why can’t I log in to my account at the link provided?

On a few days during the year, the university performs system maintenance and/or software upgrades on on-campus systems. During those times, usually for just a couple hours, you will not be able to authenticate using your EMU login credentials to get to your Via account. If this happens, you can try again in a few hours, or you may try the method below. If neither method works, you may wish to contact the company directly.

Can I log in to my account directly on the Via website?

You may visit the Via website to log in to your account. Use your EMU email address as your login name, and click the forgotten password link. You will then be sent an email to reset your Via login password - for times when you login directly on their website. This does not change your login process when you use the EMU login authentication process.
