1st International COER Colloquium
Florence, Italy, July 7-9, 2006

“Addressing Ethnicity: Theory, Practice, Policy”

What theoretical models of ethnicity afford the best understanding of its dynamics? What practices best accommodate ethnic differences and ensure constructive group relations? What social policies facilitate ethnic integration and best assuage potential intergroup conflict? Are successful approaches linked to the specific settings in which they emerge or can they be generalizable? Can theoretical models be translated into constructive policy recommendations? Can application outcomes be predicted?

PROGRAM

Venue & Structure

The venue was the Palazzo Nonfinito in central Florence (via del Proconsolo 12) , site of the Institute of Anthropology, whose Director, Professor Brunetto Chiarelli, generously offered hospitality for the meeting.

The structure of the Colloquium involved the participation of expert observers and invited speakers. Speakers were allocated 30 minutes for their presentations, which were grouped by topic in sets of two or three. At the conclusion of each set of presentations colloquium participants were invited to respond, leading to plenary discussion sessions.
