About this Program

The Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering (BSECE) program prepares engineers for interesting and challenging positions in diverse fields of electrical and computer engineering from automotive, energy, communication to consumer electronics such as smartphones, tablets, computers, appliances and much more. The program prepares graduates to be at the forefront of designing the next generation of electrical and computer devices.

Students learn the theory and principles of electricity, electronic devices and complex system design. The curriculum covers analog and digital circuits, microprocessors, power systems, electrical components and how these are incorporated into sensors, actuators and computer systems. Students will learn about electrical and computer engineering design, computer systems, and computer networking. There are many opportunities for hands-on learning as well as traditional theory based learning.

Employment opportunities are excellent in developing, designing, testing and supervising the manufacturing of electrical devices, communication systems, computer systems, and power generation equipment. Electrical and computer engineers also design the electrical systems of automobiles and aircraft. There are also job opportunities in technical sales and operations. An ECE degree also offers an excellent background for advanced training in engineering, business, law, medicine, and other analytical disciplines.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) program at Eastern Michigan University is to provide a high-quality, application-oriented education which develops future professionals who will improve the design and development of existing and new technologies. The goal of the program is to provide college graduates with the skills needed to successfully enter the workforce, the potential to grow with the needs of the advancement of technology, and to educate future leaders in the profession. The faculty in the program are committed to providing service and leadership in the promotion and advancement of the educational goals of the University.

  • Program Educational Objectives

The Electrical and Computer Engineering program has the following expectations for graduates after their graduation:

    • PEO 1 – Our graduates will successfully engage in professions in Electrical and Computer Engineering and related fields.
    • PEO 2 – Our graduates will continue life-long learning through graduate education and/or professional development.
    • PEO 3 – Our graduates will develop as effective team players or team leaders in their chosen professions.
  • Student Outcomes

Eastern Michigan University's B.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering program will provide graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to achieve the program's objectives after graduation. The ECE graduates are expected to have the following abilities at graduation:
    • an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
    • an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
    • an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
    • an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
    • an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
    • an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
    • an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.
