Equity

EMU strives to create opportunities for historically underrepresented populations to have equal access to and participation in educational programs that are capable of closing the achievement gaps in student success and completion.

Our Goal

Our goal is for faculty and staff to have equal access to professional growth opportunities and resource networks that are capable of closing the demographic disparities in leadership roles in all spheres of institutional functioning.

Equity Resources

  • Commission on Diversity and Inclusion

The Mission of the President's Commission on Diversity and Inclusion is to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion of all members of the university community, and to empower their full participation.  The Commission facilitates the aspirational pursuit of social justice and dialogue as informed by intersectional perspectives of race, ethnicity, culture, gender, class, sexual orientation, disability, age, religion, national origin, and language.

Visit the Commission on Diversity and Inclusion website.

  • Disability Resource Center

The EMU Disability Resource Center views disabilities as an integral part of the rich diversity of our campus community and society. We work collaboratively with students, faculty and staff to create an accessible, sustainable, and inclusive educational environment for all students.

  • Diversity & Affirmative Action Office

The Office of Diversity and Affirmative Action provides programs fostering a diverse faculty, staff and student body. We're a resource for the entire EMU community for all diversity and equal opportunity issues.

  • Diversity & Community Involvement Office

The DCI offers many opportunities for students to learn, develop and find a place to belong.  Through our various programs and services, we assist students with their transition to college, engage them in meaningful dialogue, help them develop their leadership potential, and equip them with the tools to become responsible global citizens.

  • Gender Inclusive Housing

To provide support for the needs of current and incoming LGBTQ students and others with specific needs, gender-inclusive housing is available for all undergraduate and graduate students in a variety of housing types across campus. This option meets the needs of all of our residents, inclusive of all sexes, genders, gender identities and expressions. It means that for residents, women, men, and people of all gender identities and expressions can live together.

  • Gender Neutral Restrooms

We recognize the need for inclusive restrooms on campus and will continue to work toward all campus buildings having a gender neutral restroom. This campus building map includes restrooms that we are aware of as of December 2014.

  • Lactation Support

EMU believes in supporting mothers in their return to work or school at EMU. That's why we provide clean, secure and user-friendly lactation rooms for all women affiliated with the University, as well as visitors.

  • Preferred Name Initiative

EMU recognizes that, as a community, many of its members use names other than their legal names to identify themselves. As long as the use of this preferred name is not for purposes of misrepresentation, EMU acknowledges that a preferred name can and should be used wherever possible in the course of University business and education. EMU also acknowledges that an identifying pronoun may be desired and should be allowed whenever possible.
