Alternative Media

Alternative media is the provision of printed materials in an alternative format for individuals with visual, physical or information processing disabilities. Alternative media, commonly referred to as “alt media” is the conversion of required course materials such as textbooks, coursework, exams and other print materials into an accessible format, such as PDF, RTF (Rich Text Format) or DOC (Document), DAISY (Digital Accessible Information System), MP3 (Audio) and Braille.

Eastern Michigan University (EMU) considers requests for accommodations including alternative media conversion on an individual, case-by-case basis. Student must be registered with the DRC and determined eligible to receive alternative media services.

The DRC has adopted a new organizational system for Alternative Media. The Alternative Media Specialist will prioritize student’s requests based on readings, assignments, and course handouts listed in their course syllabi. Completed media requests will be available at least one week prior to assigned dates listed in the syllabus. In doing so, this helps reduce the waiting time for converted materials. Please understand that full conversions of books will not be sent in a single setting.

Due to this new system, the DRC asks that students provide their syllabus for each course requiring Alternative Media services, in a timely manner. We also ask students to be mindful of notifying the DRC immediately, if there are any changes in a class schedule or if the student no longer needs the requested course materials.
