Students Stay Safe

EMU’s Students Stay Safe program requires students taking classes with an in-person component to choose either to receive a COVID-19 vaccine or undergo weekly COVID-19 testing.

COVID-19 Vaccination

Students who choose to be vaccinated against COVID-19 and report their vaccination status through EMU’s Vaccine Certification system are not required to undergo regular COVID-19 testing, and are eligible for EMU’s Vax to Win program

The COVID-19 vaccine is safe, effective, and free. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has given full approval to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine. All members of the campus community are encouraged to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

There are many opportunities to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, including pop-up clinics that the University has scheduled for late-August and early-September. You may learn more here about where to obtain a free COVID-19 vaccine.

COVID-19 Testing for Unvaccinated Students

Students who choose not to be vaccinated and report their vaccination status to the University must undergo weekly COVID-19 testing.

Students subject to regular COVID-19 testing will be notified of their testing requirement through their EMU e-mail. Testing is available at EMU’s on-campus testing center or students may upload test results to a portal that will be provided to those students in an email sent to their EMU email account.

Some student populations may be required to undergo more frequent testing if they participate in an activity with a higher risk of transmitting COVID-19. Those students will be notified of their additional testing requirement through their EMU email account.

Limited Exemption

Students are exempt from the Students Stay Safe program if they are not enrolled in any EMU courses with an in-person on-campus component and are not subject to a vaccination mandate as part of another University program. This exemption is limited. For example, students who live in on-campus housing must be vaccinated against COVID-19 even if they are enrolled in exclusively online courses. Students who are exempt from the Students Stay Safe program will not be notified of a regular testing requirement.

Timeline

This policy is effective with the start of the fall semester (Monday, August 30, 2021). Students who have not received their final COVID-19 vaccine shot and reported their vaccination status through the University’s Vaccine Certification system by Friday, September 3, 2021, will receive an email with details about their testing requirements. Students who receive their final shot after that date will no longer be subject to testing as soon as they report their vaccination status

Participate in the EMU "Get the Vax to Win" Program

Students (and employees) who receive the COVID-19 vaccine and report their vaccination status by the applicable deadlines will be entered into drawings to receive one of many prizes. Prizes for students include a free semester of on-campus housing and a $5,000 credit to your student account. Prizes for employees include a $500 payment.
