Teaching

We would love to talk with you about teaching an EMU course at Women's Huron Valley Correctional Facility. All instructors are asked to participate in an Orientation.

How your donation will impact students:

  • School Supplies / Textbooks / JPay Communication
    • CiP provides all necessary school supplies and textbooks at NO COST to our students. Due to MDOC regulations, only approved supplies are permitted making options and affordability limited.
    • JPay is the only means of electronic communication with students. This MDOC approved system charges our program and our students for each message sent. In order to keep costs down for students, we provide funding for their responses to our messages.
    • CiP spends roughly $420 per student per semester on these supplies and JPay communication.
  • Tuition
    • A majority of student tuition is funded through Federal Pell Grants. However, Pell funding falls short of meeting the full financial need of students. The MDOC, CiP, and EMU are committed to ensuring that no students leaves prison with academic debt. This means that CiP must fill this financial gap.
    • On average, our program funds approximately $280 per student each semester. We expect this number to double within the next 3 years.
  • Student Clubs / Organizations / Events
    • In an effort to mirror a main campus experience as much as possible, we excitedly welcome student-led events and initiatives! We have been able to welcome guest speakers into the prison and look forward to hosting student competitions and events. Some examples include: The first annual Business Pitch Competition, a student debate, a student literary journal, Behind the Wire (student newsletter), academic challenge competitions, and more!
    • Funding needs to support these events vary, but we anticipate a growing need for such support. Currently there is a budget set for $500-$1000 for each of these related events
