The Eastern Scholars program is concurrent enrollment, which offers college-level courses at high schools. This academic program is customized to meet the needs of both EMU and the high school. It prepares students to receive academic credit upon completion of the course work.

The curriculum is focused on the principles of the associate discipline and will afford students the opportunity to develop skills in a specific area.

  • Recruitment and Registration

    Recruiting is conducted by the high school in accordance with EMU’s requirements; 2.5 GPA or higher and other admissions requirements, and the high school requirements for dual enrollment participation.

    All students selected for participation must apply by filling our the Application for Alternative Secondary School Options and a registration form. Once admitted and registered for their class (es) the student may access EMU online resources such as the library and other benefits as a EMU campus student.

    The program does not constitute admittance to the university and students who wish to attend EMU upon graduation must meet all regular university requirements.

    Model A

    • $5,000 per university class
    • Taught by high school teacher
    • Must be approved by EMU
    • No minimum student enrollment
    • Maximum Student Enrollment: 30

    Model A: High School teachers must submit a resume, course curriculum and textbook to EMU for department approval.

    Model B

    • $10,000 per university class
    • Taught by EMU faculty/lecturer
    • Minimum Student Enrollment: 20
    • Maximum Student Enrollment: 30
    • A EMU Program Coordinator will visit your classroom throughout the course.

    A 3-credit college level course is $1,795.00. With 30 students in a high school teacher taught course, each student is saving approximately 86% off the regular college credit price.

    The HS is responsible for recruitment: 9th to 12th grade students must have a 2.5 GPA or higher and complete the EMU application, registration and FERPA forms.

    • The HS determines if the students receive high school and college credit.
    • The time-line is flexible. The courses can be offered per semester or the entire school year.
    • Students are responsible for purchasing textbooks if required for the course.
    • EMU college visit opportunities   where the class can observe a college-level lecture.

    Model A - High School Instruction

    • Setup the CRN (Course)
    • Approve the high school teacher, curriculum and textbook
    • Ensure course contact hours are being met
    • Must have a course syllabus and objectives on file

    Model B - EMU Instruction

    • Setup the CRN (Course)
    • Approve the curriculum and textbook
    • Hire an EMU lecturer to teach the course
    • This course would be included in their current workload
    • Engage@EMU will pay lecturer rates and mileage
    • Ensure course contact hours are being met
    • Must have a course syllabus and objectives on file
  • Program Steps

    Step 1: Department Approval

    *Submit a course syllabus and instructor’s resume to the department for approval. Courses will be set up once approved.

    Step 2: Complete the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU)

    EMU will invoice the school directly and administer prerequisite testing (if applicable).

    Step 3: Students complete the forms (application, registration & FERPA) and submit them.

    All forms can be scanned and emailed to [email protected]. Do not mail forms unless you are using overnight express mail. The form submission process is time sensitive. Contact the office before mailing any documents.

    *Students must be registered within the first 2 weeks of the start of the course. After registration deadline, students will NOT be able to add the course.

    NOTE: If a student needs to withdraw or drop the course, it must be done both at the high school and with EMU.

    Step 4: EMU Site Visit with Students (PowerPoint) (est. 30 minutes)

    Step 5: End of the course, complete grade sheets.

    Step 6: Students request transcripts from EMU to receive credits.
