Alumni Spotlight - Jennifer Pulling

March 22, 2016

Jennifer Pulling is an alumna of the English Language and Literature department here at Eastern.  Jen graduated with her Master of Arts in Children’s Literature in April 2015.

As the Member Engagement Administrative Assistant at the Midwest Collaborative for Library Services (MCLS), Jen's position entails supporting the marketing team at MCLS by engaging and responding to librarian’s questions about their services, registering for conferences, general event planning, and other various tasks.

How did you get your current position?

The job was listed on Career Builder, a well-known job searching website.  I applied, and then went through two interviews until I was appointed the position.

Why did you choose to attend Eastern?

EMU is the only school with a Children’s Literature program in Michigan, and one of the few in the country, as well.

What was your major, and why did you pick it?

Before I came to EMU, I was unsure about what I wanted to do for a career.  It was my job as a bookseller at Schuler Books that made me realize that I wanted to surround my life with books.  When I found out that I could study Children’s Literature at EMU, I applied at once.  The rest is history.

How has the English department and the classes you completed helped you in your career?

I have learned critical thinking skills, and gained a perspective on literature as a whole that you could not gain in a work environment.  There are layers of experience that you bring everywhere you go.  My time and education is just one layer that makes me more valuable as a potential employee.

What advice would you give to current English students?
