Undergraduate Major or Minor in Creative Writing

Undergraduate students must apply to Eastern Michigan University via the Eastern Michigan University Office of Admissions website.

Master of Arts Program in Creative Writing

NOTE: Applications are accepted throughout the year and reviewed semi-annually. Please refer to the English Department's graduate studies website for funding opportunities and deadlines.

Follow the steps below to apply to the M.A. Program in Creative Writing:

Step #1 - Submit an application to the Office of Admissions. Complete and return the application with payment to:

Step #2 - Submit your Creative Writing Portfolio and Personal Statement to the English Department

Your creative writing portfolio can represent several short pieces in one genre or several short pieces in multiple genres. Compile 15-20 pages of what you believe is your best work. Your personal statement should be brief (no more than one-to-two pages) and it should explain either your experience with and/or interest in interdisciplinary writing projects, and how you might work across disciplines while you pursue graduate coursework at Eastern Michigan University. Submit the above, together with your name, contact information and email address, to:

NOTE: Letters of recommendation are optional for candidates applying to the MA in Creative Writing. Any references you do send should be directed to the address above.

We will accept electronic portfolios as attachments and we will be happy to consider work on websites or blogs; please provide the link in an email or the url in your personal statement. We also encourage the submission of cds or dvds if appropriate.

NOTE: Expect to hear our decision on your application by March 15.

Step #3 - Apply for a graduate assistantship position in the English Department
