EMU Foundation ends 2016 fiscal year with $11.6 million for the highest giving year to date

The Eastern Michigan University Foundation is excited to announce the close of its highest giving year to date, with a total of $11.6 million.

“Every year, our donors amaze us with their generosity,” said Jill Hunsberger,  Interim Vice President for Advancement. “They continue to go above and beyond, and we are extremely grateful for their support.”

Major gifts this year included those from Delores and Bill Brehm and the Diane and Bruce Halle Foundation. The Brehms’ gift of $3.2 million will be allocated to students in music therapy and special education programs. Bruce and Diane Halle made a contribution that will enhance their established endowment, benefitting students in social justice through a scholarship and a fellowship, as well as endowing a chair of entrepreneurship in the College of Business.

Other initiatives made possible by donor support include:

· Resources and programming through MAGIC (Mentorship Access Guidance in College) for students experiencing homelessness.

· Nearly $18,500 pounds of food for Swoop’s Student Food Pantry.

· Cooking items and supplies for the dietetics program demonstration kitchen.

· “Social Justice with Food Access and Security” presentation by Amanda Edmonds, Executive Director of Growing Hope.

· SURF (Symposium Undergraduate Research Fellows) funding for 22 students, enabling them to conduct and present hands-on research in their programs of study.

· An educational trip through the Jewish Studies program to New York City, Philadelphia and Washington DC to explore “Becoming Jewish in America.”

· Digital Divas Conference for young women pursuing education in STEM fields, an event that focused on breaking down gender stereotypes, career possibilities in technology and recruiting young women into technology majors.

Eastern’s new president, Dr. James Smith, brings a renewed sense of philanthropy to his role, offering overwhelming promise for the 2017 fiscal year. The EMU Foundation staff looks forward to another successful year of donor support and continuing to make an impact on Eastern’s students and the community.
