Why I give

Jordan Dekker (BBA11)

Eastern Michigan University left a major impression on Alumnus Jordan Dekker. And now, Jordan is returning the favor through yearly giving in order to benefit a new generation of students.

Jordan was the recipient of three, donor-funded scholarships during his time at the University. He graduated from the Honors College in 2011. After graduation, Jordan immediately started contributing to the programs and funds that helped support him during his time as an undergraduate student.

Or in his words, he simply wanted to "pay it forward."

"Being supported by these scholarships, it gave me the whole package of having a great experience," says Jordan, who is currently stationed in China on a work exchange program with the Ford Motor Co. "(The scholarship support) allowed me to focus on my studies. I worked a little bit in Office of Admissions, but I was able to put my studies first."

The 28-year-old from Grand Rapids, Mich., graduated from EMU with a Bachelor's of Business Administration, and recently received his Master's of Business Administration from University of Michigan. At EMU, he was the recipient of multiple donor-funded scholarships including the Susan and John Ullrich Endowed Scholarship, the Richard & Norma Sarns Endowed Scholarship and the Dr. Russell Ogden Expendable Scholarship Fund.

Jordan says he was also very impressed with the direction of the Honors College under the leadership and vision of Rebecca Sipe and John Feldkamp, which inspired him to give back.

"I saw what was going on and was really impressed with what (Rebecca and John) were doing," says Jordan. "They were really taking (The Honors College) to the next level, and I wanted to be a part of that."

Even being 7,000 miles away from home, Jordan takes time to stay updated on local happenings at EMU and, of course, has continued donating.

"People supported me when I was a student, they helped to provide those opportunities," says Jordan. "I wanted to help other students have that same support."
