Brooke O'Neil

Brooke O’Neil is a senior criminology major at Eastern Michigan University, and is the first-ever recipient of the Greg O’Dell Criminal Justice Scholarship. The scholarship was named after a highly-respected former chief of police at EMU who had died in December 2011.

O’Neil was surprised when she received the news that she was awarded the prestigious scholarship, worth $100,000. She also received the Regent’s Scholarship from Eastern.  “[The scholarships] have helped for myriad reasons; it has helped to get me recognition within the department, making it easier to apply to graduate schools and get letters of recommendation from professors.”

O’Neil, from St. Clair Shores, has a 3.96 GPA and has been on the Dean’s List for six consecutive semesters. She has excelled in her criminology and criminal justice courses, on top of taking additional coursework in white-collar crime to fulfill her Honors College requirements.

Aside from her academic pursuits, O’Neil has been very active in various on-campus organizations and community, including her membership in Sigma Delta Tau sorority, participating in Relay for Life and being Night Watch in the residence halls. She was also a presenter at the National Women’s Studies Association Conference in San Francisco, CA.

“This gives me the ability to not have to juggle multiple jobs like I’ve had to do in the past, and it gives me time to focus more on my current schoolwork as well as my future endeavors.”

O’Neil is expected to graduate Spring 2014, with plans to attend graduate school to obtain a Doctorate and to ultimately become a professor in the field of criminology and criminal justice.
