#Give2EMU: Because your gift gives them a chance.

Megan DeVoe is a two-time graduate of Eastern and spent her time here helping others. Below is a note about how MAGIC (Mentorship Access Guidance in College) impacts the students at EMU, and how you can help them do so:

I’m asking you to help this week and it’s personal.

Today, I’d like you to join thousands of alumni and friends by making a gift to student support programs like MAGIC (Mentorship Access Guidance in College).

When I came to Eastern, I didn’t think there were many people like me. I didn’t think people would understand what it was like to grow up with Child Protective Services constantly in and out of their home.

I had one stable person in my life, and that was my high school boyfriend, whom I followed to EMU. Upon arriving on campus, I became part of the Honors College and met a young woman named Kara, who had had similar experiences with the foster-care system. I worked three jobs to cover my tuition and living expenses, while my two sisters went to another four-year university for virtually free.

I kept wondering how we could do better at Eastern to help students experiencing homelessness or aging out of the foster-care system.

Then, during graduate school, an advisor helped connect me to MAGIC. MAGIC is a part of Academic Success Partnerships, and its mission is to increase graduation rates among students who have experienced foster care or homelessness. I quickly became a part of the MAGIC team.

MAGIC staff members (sometimes I believe they are actually magical) help students by removing barriers that could otherwise prevent them from being successful in college. For example, academic preparation, medical bills, social support, basic life skills and resources are all areas of focus.

Now that I am a two-time alumna of Eastern, I’m proud of the work I did with MAGIC as a student. We’ve been able to increase awareness about challenges facing students who have experienced foster care and/or homelessness, collect meaningful donations from alumni and friends, and build a community of support for students who need it most.

I hope you will choose to make a difference today by supporting MAGIC. Our students are counting on you!

Make A Gift
Sincerely,

Megan DeVoe
