New Students

Congratulations on your admission and welcome to Graduate Studies at Eastern Michigan University!

One of the best ways to make your transition to graduate school life is to attend orientation. You will receive valuable information and get a chance to meet faculty, staff and fellow students.

Use our New Graduate Student To-Do List to prepare before you arrive on campus and to ensure you stay on track as you acclimate.

Once admitted, you will need to register for classes. You can register online or in person at the Office of Records and Registration. Each student must activate a my.emich account using their student ID and PIN number.

*Many graduate programs conduct their own program-specific orientations. Please check your emich email or contact your home department or school for more information.

Newly admitted students are highly encouraged to attend New Graduate Student Orientation, which is an opportunity for graduate students to meet with university administrators, graduate advisors, faculty, support staff and fellow students.

The program includes information on university resources and tips to help you succeed in your graduate career. We hope that you will find the information on this site valuable as you begin your graduate academic journey.

New Graduate Assistants or Doctoral Fellows Only:

Regardless of assigned duties, all Graduate Assistants and doctoral Fellows are required to participate in a New Graduate Assistant/Doctoral Fellow Orientation. There will be two orientations offered in the fall; August 22 10:00-11:00am and August 27th from 4:30-5:30pm. You can attend either session, because the content will be the same in both. The content of the orientations will include the following:

Required paperwork for employment
FERPA overview
Clery Act
Title IX
Campus Safety
Resources on Campus for the GA/DF and students

Sessions will take place virtually and attendance will be taken. Failure to attend may lead to a delay in pay, a delay in the start date of the assistantship/fellowship, and/or termination of the assistantship/fellowship.
