LITR 202 Current Events in World Literature
Course Description: Are you a news junkie? Do you feel that you never get “the whole story” from mainstream media? If so, this course is for you. An introduction to world literature, this course focuses on contemporary fiction – novels and short stories – in the context of current trends in culture and politics of different communities across the globe. It explores the diverse narrative techniques in imaginative writing that address crucial contemporary issues such as multiculturalism, war, conflict, globalization, technology and the environment. The goal of the course is to place into conversation the different narrative representations of current events that many students are familiar with in order to achieve a nuanced understanding of issues at hand, expose the mechanisms of privileged narration, and raise awareness about the responsibility of acknowledging multiple, conflicting perspectives on any topic.
