Types of Honors

University Honors

University Honors is a great way for a student to get involved and introduced to EMU's campus and community.

To achieve University Honors, students must complete the following requirements:

  • 18 credits in Honors General Education courses
  • Three Honors credits in the student's major or minor
  • Three additional Honors credits in either the student's major, minor, or General Education
  • 40 hours of community service [PDF]
  • One Honors Experience [PDF] in Leadership/Civic Engagement
  • One Honors Experience [PDF] in Cultural/Intellectual areas
  • Attend three Star Lecture Series lectures in one academic year and submit a typed paper to The Honors College to receive credit for the lectures
  • Attend one Undergraduate Research/Creative Project Workshop
  • Maintain a 3.3 cumulative GPA

Departmental Honors

Once students have declared their major, they may pursue departmental honors which leads to distinction in their major or minor.

Students wishing to pursue Departmental Honors must complete the following requirements:

Highest Honors

Highest Honors marks the most distinctive recognition of academic excellence in The Honors College. Upon completion of 56 credits, students may apply for Highest Honors. Completion demonstrates a commitment to community, international awareness, service, and research.

To achieve Highest Honors, students must complete the following requirements:

  • Submit a Highest Honors application [PDF] between 56 and 84 completed EMU credits
  • 24 Honors credits (includes credits completed for University or Departmental Honors)
  • Complete Global Competency by EITHER studying abroad or demonstrating competency of a world language at second year level or an international internship
  • Complete 60 community service hours [PDF] (includes the 40 required for University Honors)
  • Complete Senior Thesis [PDF] or Creative Project
  • Present at the Undergraduate Symposium or similar style conference
  • Maintain a 3.7 cumulative GPA
