2015 Honors College Orientation: Saturday, August 8th 2015

8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Check-in begins at 8:00 a.m.

Location: Student Center Ballroom - 900 Oakwood St, Ypsilanti, MI 48197

We are excited to greet our incoming class of Honors College students and help students begin their Honors College experience! It all begins with Honors College Orientation where students start their college career and learn about the opportunities that exist for them in The Honors College at EMU. Students can RSVP for the event, and we ask that they do so prior to July 24th to best help us with our planning.

Honors College Orientation is a wonderful opportunity for incoming first-year college students to meet incoming and current Honors students, explore our campus, prepare for your transition to college, meet EMU staff, and officially activate your Honors College membership, which is required for priority registration and other special Honors benefits. Keep in mind that all Honors students must attend an Honors College Orientation in order to activate their membership (note: attending Fast Track does not satisfy your Honors College Orientation requirement). At Honors College Orientation, registration will begin at 8:00 a.m., followed by a welcome session at 8:30 a.m. You will attend various informational sessions as well as group activities that will give you a chance to meet your future classmates. Current Honors students will be on hand throughout the day, and lunch will be provided.

While you are participating in the day’s orientation, we will also be offering an optional orientation for your parents and family members. Their orientation activities will take place in room 201 of Pray-Harrold. Directions from the Student Center to Pray-Harrold can be found on our Parking Map. Registration for Honors Family Orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. in Pray-Harrold followed by a welcome starting at 9:00 a.m. More information about Family Orientation can be found below.

There are also multiple parking lots available during the day for both students and family members.

If you need additional assistance or have questions, please contact Taylor Lash at tlash2@emich.edu.

At Honors College Orientation, you will be introduced to F. Scott Fitzgerald's book, The Great Gatsby. This book will serve as the Honors College Common Read for the incoming class as we discuss the topic, "a life well lived." We ask you read the book and be prepared to discuss it at the Honors College Common Read Discussion, which takes place on Monday, September 7th, during First Four. The EMU Student Center Bookstore will have copies available for sale on August 8th for $15 plus tax, or you can preorder the book for the same price here. If you chose to find the book a different way, the ISBN number of the edition we will be using is 9780743273565, but you may also use a different edition if you prefer. Poll Everywhere - please bring your cell phone with a data plan and/or texting capability

At Honors College Orientation, we will also be holding an activity that involves audience polling and interaction. We anticipate using the website Poll Everywhere. Please check the Poll Everywhere website before you attend Honors College Orientation so you are familiar with it. We ask that if you have a cell phone that has a data plan and/or texting capability that you bring it with you as well. If you do not have a phone with those capabilities, that is okay -- you will be working with a group of students and just need one device per group. In our RSVP survey, there is a question that asks about your phone’s capability, so please let us know so that we can do our best to plan accordingly (message and data rates may apply based on your plan with your mobile phone carrier).
