Understanding Banner Navigation Terminology

Note: The information on this page applies to INB Banner, version 8. The content is no longer updated, but may still be useful as a general reference for later versions of Banner.

There are several ways to access and navigate between forms in Banner: Go box, Banner Menu System, Toolbar, and Menu Bar including the Options menu. We recommend using the Go box to open individual Banner Forms and the toolbar to move around within the open form.

    • Menu Bar: The menu bar contains a list of pull-down menu that help to navigate the Banner system. If a menu title is disabled (gray), it cannot be accessed.
    • Toolbar:Toolbars are one of the easiest ways to navigate and perform common Banner functions. When the pointer is moved onto one of the graphical buttons, a yellow bubble appears with text that describes its function.
    • Go To... Box: The Go To box is a short-cut to accessing forms directly. Just type the form name in the box and press enter.
    • Banner Process Menus: Another way to access a form is through the Banner process menus. This hierarchical menu system provides an organized outline method to locate and open forms you need to use. Just click on the menu links to navigate the menu structure.

Key Blocks and Information Blocks

A block is the portion of a form or window that contains related information. For most forms, the key block is the first block of information on a form. The remainder of the form content, also know as information block(s), is defined by what is entered in this block.

    • Records and Fields: A block can contain one or many subsets of related information called records. These records are composed of fields from an underlying table or view in the database. Fields are areas on a form where you can enter, query, change, and display information. A field is sometimes called an item.
    • Navigation Tabs: Navigation tabs allow the user to navigate between blocks simply by clicking on the appropriate tab. In the current version of Banner, only a few forms have navigation tabs, but we will see more in future releases.
    • Auto Hint/Status Line: The Auto Hint/Status Line, located in the lower left-hand corner of the screen, can contain helpful hints regarding the currently selected field, error and processing messages, and keyboard equivalents on how to access other blocks, windows, or forms.
