Information for Trans, Genderqueer, and Non-binary Students

As one of the Top 100 LGBT affirmative schools in the country, we pride ourselves on ensuring our campus an inclusive space. This page has been created in an effort to help students navigate the EMU campus and systems in regard to gender identity.

Preferred Name and Pronouns Policy:

Quick Disclaimer: We recognize that the language of “preferred’ name and “preferred” pronouns may be problematic. This language is being used due to the ways that this information is labeled within the Banner (student information) system, and because it is the language that is understood by individuals outside of the LGBTQ community. At this time “preferred” name refers to first names only. As of December 2016, only students can utilize the "preferred" name and pronouns feature. We hope to expand the policy to include faculty and staff soon.

  • “Preferred” name: The first name that you (plan/want to) use in your daily life at EMU. In terms of this policy, this would be a name that is different from your legal first name. This is used by lots of people, including some transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming  identified people, some cisgender people who go by shortened names, middle names, or other names in their daily life, and some international or immigrant students, among others.
  • Legal Name: The first name currently recognized by the state and federal government.
  • “Preferred” pronouns: The way you would like people to refer to you when they are not using your name. Those are the pronouns she uses to refer to herself. Currently, there are three options that one can choose for their pronouns within the EMU system. She/her/hers, he/him/his, and they/them/theirs. We hope to add more options in the future. Currently, you can only choose one of the three options. We are also hoping to change this in the future.

How do I select a “preferred” name and/or pronouns?

  1. Log into my.emich.edu with your EMU username and password (same as your email).
  2. Click on Student tab.
  3. Click on Personal Information.
  4. Click on Update Preferred Name and Pronouns (last option).
  5. Type “preferred” name and/or select pronouns from the drop down menu.
  6. Click on the box stating that you have read, understand and agree to the conditions regarding the changing of your preferred name and/or pronoun.
  7. Click Submit.

Where is it used?

The following EMU systems and documents have been updated to automatically include preferred names and/or pronouns selected by EMU students (as of December 2016).

  • Faculty Class Lists and Rosters
  • Faculty Attendance Sheets (name only, no pronouns)
  • Faculty Grade Sheets (name only, no pronouns)
  • Faculty and Student Advising Overviews (in my.emich)
  • Canvas (name only, no pronouns)

The following EMU systems and documents have been updated to allow for one's "preferred" name to show up, but require aditional actions on the part of the student.

  • Student ID Card - Student can go to the ID Card office for a replacement card. The card will not look like the Eagle One card, but will instead look like a staff ID card.
  • Student Email Name (name shown, such as John Doe) - This can be changed, with or without a "preferred" name submitted, through Gmail settings.
    • Open your EMU email through my.emich or gmail.com and sign in.
    • Click on the gear (settings) in the top right corner of the screen.
    • Click on settings from the drop down menu.
    • Click on Accounts and Imports in the menu bar near the top of the page.
    • Under the “Send mail as” section, you will see the current name that is shown to others when you email them. To change this, click on “edit info” on the right side of this section.
    • Click on the empty bullet point under your current email name and type the full name that you would like others to see when you email them (first, middle name or initial if desired, AND last name).
    • Click Save Changes.
  • Student Email Address (email username, such as jdoe999@emich.edu) - Contact the Division of Information Technology at 734-487-3141 to receive a new email username.

The following EMU systems and documents have not been updated to allow for one's "preferred" name to show up, and therefore will only show one's legal name.

Legal Name Changes:

If you go through the process of a legal name change, it is encouraged that you inform EMU about this change as soon as possible. Changing your legal name does not eliminate your right to choose a “preferred” name or pronouns. Legally changing your gender marker does not alter your pronoun selection or alter your ability to select pronouns. At this time, one’s gender marker cannot be changed in EMU systems without a legal gender marker change.

Gender Neutral Restrooms:
We recognize the need for inclusive restrooms on campus and will continue to work toward all campus buildings having a gender neutral restroom. This campus building map includes restrooms that we are aware of as of December 2014: http://www.emich.edu/maps/

Eastern Michigan University is committed to providing accessible housing options for all students. There are gender neutral housing options available on our standard application for the majority of the halls on campus.
Did you know that EMU also offers a LGBTQA community living option in housing? This community is for all students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, or any other sexual orientation or gender identity/expression. Allies and friends are also invited to live in this community. Students will work to create a supportive and inclusive community that encourages academic and personal growth. Residents can expect programming that explores gender and sexual identities and will be tied into campus organization like the LGBT Resource Center. The floor is located in Hoyt Hall.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Resource Center is part of Diversity & Community Involvement
