Virtual Tutoring Information, Fall 2020
As we move forward during these challenging times, the Math Lab is constantly evolving in an effort to best meet the needs of EMU students enrolled in undergraduate MATH and STAT courses. If you are enrolled in an undergraduate MATH or STAT course, we welcome you to seek tutoring from the Math Tutoring Center. We are pleased to be offering tutoring virtually during the Fall 2020 semester.
We offer expanded online tutoring services:
UPDATE: Due to overwhelming popularity, we will have to cap the one on one zoom tutoring sessions to two 25-minute sessions a day maximum. When making an appointment, please book it no less than 30 minutes in advance so that the staff can be properly prepared. If you need more time, use the live chat discord where tutors are available throughout the day.
Tutors are available to answer your questions by e-mail. During tutoring hours, e-mail us at [email protected]. Students are asked to limit their questions to the primary areas of concern in order to get the best feedback possible.
Students can send screenshots or photos of the question they need assistance with. Please note that tutors will not help with quizzes, tests or projects. Students should also identify which course they are in so that tutors can tailor their responses to the course.
Tutors will do their best to meet the needs of everyone who submits questions. Please be aware that response time may fluctuate, but we will do our best to answer questions with 24 hours.
Tutors are available to answer your questions with live chat through Discord. To get help from a tutor, students must access the chat. Live chat will only be available on the weekdays, Monday through Friday, at this time. Students may get help in the courses Math 097 to Math 121, and Stat 170 on a daily basis via the chat.
Once in the tutoring server, students can access a tutor by first locating their course server on the left hand side of the page. Being in the correct classroom channel will help tailor the tutoring experience to information learned in that course.
Students may schedule 25-minute appointments for one on one tutoring with one of the tutoring staff. To access the staff schedule go to the Tutoring Staff Gallery link of the tutoring website.
Tutor information, including what courses they can help with as well as their hours are located at the top of the page. To set an appointment up with a tutor for one on one tutoring, click the “Schedule a Tutoring Appointment” link in their profile. This will take you to a google calendar where you can create an appointment.
Choose the time that works best for you. When creating an appointment please make sure to include your name, your email, your course, and the topic that you need help with in the description. Note that while the time on the calendar says 30 minutes, the session will be 25 minutes in order for the tutor to have time between sessions.
Once you save, an email with be sent to the tutor you chose notifying them of the scheduled appointment. They will then send you a zoom link for your appointment.
For any questions, please contact Sara Lynne Schultz, Coordinator of the Mathematics Tutoring Center, at [email protected].

Mathematics Tutoring Center Services
Located at 411 Pray-Harrold, the Mathematics Tutoring Center is comprised of a suite of rooms providing the following:
Free drop-in tutoring for EMU students is available during all hours that the Math Lab is open. You can stop in for help with:
- Specific math homework problems or math concepts
- Studying for the math placement exams
- Studying for standardized tests such as the GRE or GMAT
The Math Lab provides access to computers for use by students for academic purposes, such as working on online homework.
Textbooks and Calculators
Calculators as well as textbooks for most EMU math courses are available for use in the Math Lab. These materials may not be removed from the Math Lab for any reason. You must leave a form of collateral, either keys or a phone, at the front desk while you are using one of our resources.
Student Usage Tracking
All students using the Math Lab are required to log in at the front desk upon arriving and to log out at the front desk prior to leaving. This is very important because the continuation of funding for tutors depends on the usage data gathered through the log in system.
