Derek Shapiro serves as the interim associate director of bands where he is director of the EMU Marching Band, Symphonic and Concert Bands and teaches courses in conducting and music education. He was previously associate director of bands at Georgia Southern University.
He taught in the public schools of Orlando, FL for nine years where his experiences included middle school and high school bands. As director of the band program at Cypress Creek High School, his ensembles regularly earned accolades at the district and state levels and won the state marching band class 4A championship in 2007 and 2010. In 2009 and 2011, the Cypress Creek bands received the Otto J. Kraushaar Award for Excellence, an award presented to bands performing at the highest level in all areas of the program, from the Florida Bandmasters Association. The Cypress Creek High School Wind Ensemble received invitations to perform at prestigious festivals such as the National Band and Orchestra Festival held in Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2009 and the Music for All National Festival held in Indianapolis, IN in 2011.
Shapiro received his Doctor of Musical Arts in conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance with Steven D. Davis, received his Master of Music in conducting from the University of Michigan with Michael Haithcock, and received his Bachelor's of Music Education from Keene State College.
