Biography

Liza Calisesi Maidens, a native of Iowa, holds a master's degree in sacred music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a bachelor's degree in music performance from Central College in Pella, Iowa. While in Princeton, Liza was a section leader in the Westminster Symphonic Choir, which performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra and other world-renowned orchestras in premier concert halls. Liza was the graduate assistance to Joe Miller in 2011/12 and has worked with other great musical leaders such as Amanda Quist, Andrew Megill, Joseph Flummerfelt, Yannick Nézet-Séguin and Sir. Simon Rattle.

In addition, she was the director of music at the Lamington Presbyterian Church in Bedminster, NJ from 2010–2015, where she directed the adult choir, children's choir, played organ on a historic E. and G.G. Hook and Hastings and conducted the fine arts chamber series. Likewise, she was the associate director of Annual Giving for Westminster Choir College from 2012–2015.

Recently, Liza and her husband, Joel, moved to Michigan where she is on the part-time conducting faculty at Eastern Michigan University and directs EMU Express, a new ensemble in the School of Music and Dance. EMU Express will explore a variety of contemporary music, vocal jazz, pop, folk, barbershop and other modern forms of vocal chamber music.

In addition to her work at EMU School of Music and Dance, Liza is the interim director of music ministries at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Troy, MI, and the assistant director of the Detroit Concert Choir. She is a member of ACDA, Chorus America and AGO Ann Arbor Chapter.
