Fall 2020 Season

Tentatively, the EMU Marching Band is preparing for a full in-person return to campus utilizing a comprehensive health and safety plan currently under review by University Administration. Dates for Pre-camp, Band camp and leadership retreat are listed in the 2020 schedule below.

    The EMU Marching Band has a long tradition of musical and entertainment excellence, and its members pride themselves on serving as ambassadors for Eastern Michigan University. Last season, the band was honored to perform at Ford Field for the Detroit Lions halftime show.  Comprised of 175 students, the EMU Marching Band represents nearly every major on campus. "The Pride of the Peninsula" marching band has a rich 126-year history of serving EMU at athletic functions, parades, and events. The Marching Band performs for all home football games; participates in Homecoming, Band Day/Night, and Family Day activities; performs exhibitions at area and national marching band festivals and competitions; and travels to one or two away games each year. Membership is open to any student in the university by audition and field try-out at the annual pre-season Band Camp, held in August prior to the Fall Semester.

    • Enroll for the EMUMB (MUEN149L1) with the CRN 13303 for one credit.
    • The EMUMB rehearses Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 4:05–6:05 p.m. and Saturdays prior to games or events.
    • The band provides the following instruments for its members: piccolo, tenor saxophone, mellophone, baritone, sousaphone, flag, and drumline (snare, quads, bass drum, cymbal)
    • There is a $75 course participation fee.

    The band performs at all home football games, special campus events like the homecoming pep rally and Bandorama and potential bowl appearances. We also perform at select exhibitions.

    • Saturday, October 3: EMU vs. CMU | Homecoming/Alumni Band
    • Saturday, October 24: EMU vs. Toledo 
    • Saturday, November 14: Bandorama concert at Pease Auditorium7 p.m.
    • Friday, November 21: EMU vs. BGSU | Senior Day
  • 2020 Audition Information

    • All students are required to submit a virtual audition for part placement prior to Digital Pre-Camp on Saturday, August 1, 2020. Audition details can be found here (students must be signed in to their emich e-mail account for access). Auditions for winds and brass include: 1) video recording assigned music from the EMU Audition Packet 2020 (example videos are included) and 2) filling out the registration form.  If students do not have access to a marching instrument, please type “NO INSTRUMENT” in the audition form in the video submission section and plan to audition during band camp. Audition information for color guard, twirlers, and drumline is below.
    • EMU Color Guard auditions will take place August 1 at pre-camp. Twirler auditions occur in the spring. Contact Ms. Chelsea Lee, instructor, for more information.
    • Drumline auditions are held in the spring. Interested students should attend training practices prior to auditions. Contact drumline instructor, Jason Ihnat for more information.
  • Band Day at the Factory - Sept. 19 CANCELED

    Due to the uncertain nature of the fall semester during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to cancel our 2020 High School Band Day, originally scheduled for September 19.  The health and safety of all visitors and the Eastern Michigan University Marching Band students and staff is of paramount importance, as is the need to be timely in our communication to potential participants and their band programs. We look forward to hosting you and your students at this event in 2021.

  • Family Picnic - Sept. 12 CANCELED

    Due to the uncertain nature of the fall semester at EMU during the Covid-19 pandemic, we have made the difficult but prudent decision to cancel Family Picnic, originally scheduled for September 12. Although we will miss gathering with our extended band family for this annual tradition, we would not be able to do so and assure the health and safety of every one involved.  

  • Alumni Band | Homecoming October 3

    We can't wait to see you again! Come back to campus on October 3. Re-connect with friends and re-live the gameday experience. We will gather for coffee and donuts social time starting at 8:30 a.m. on the track. Alumni Band will join the EMUMB on the field for rehearsal from 9:15-10 a.m. Then experience the band spirit at "Eagle Walk" at 11:45 a.m. when the team arrives at the stadium entrance. Our pre-game performance will occur at 1:45 p.m., prior to the 2:05 p.m. kickoff! Go Green!



  • Basketball Band info

    This organization provides spirited musical entertainment at regular home games and post-season tournament play, including the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Tournaments, in support of the EMU men’s and women’s basketball teams. Consisting of both music and non-music majors, members are selected by audition near the end of the fall semester each year. Students may elect to receive course credit or per diem for each performance. For more information, contact the director, Dr. J. Nick Smith
