EMU Bands

Wind Symphony

Dr. Mary K. Schneider, conductor

The EMU Wind Symphony is guided by a philosophy that seeks to expose its students and audiences to the highest caliber of music written for wind instruments. With a commitment to cultivating new wind repertoire, the ensemble has participated in many recent commissions, and continues to host and collaborate with respected composers and conductors. The ensemble presents 4-5 concerts a year at Eastern's Pease Auditorium, and performs at high schools throughout the state as part of its annual Spring Performance Tour. Credits include many past invitational performances at Michigan's State Music Conference, including its most recent in January, 2011, in Grand Rapids. The EMU Wind Symphony was also selected to perform at the North Central Division Conference of the College Band Directors National Association in February, 2012, held in Mt. Pleasant, Michigan. Auditions for membership are competitive and held during the first week of classes in the fall semester.

Rehearsals: Mon., Wed. Fri. 1–2:50 p.m., Room 105, Alexander Music Building

Symphonic Band

Dr. Derek Shapiro, conductor

The Symphonic Band at Eastern Michigan University performs the best of traditional and contemporary literature for the collegiate concert band. Selected to provide a setting for participating students to improve their own musical understanding and appreciation, repertoire showcases the special strengths of participating students and, on occasion, invited soloists and composers. The Symphonic Band performs on campus several times during the school year. Auditions of both music majors and non-music majors for membership in the group are during the first week of classes in both the fall and winter semesters.

Rehearsals: Tues., Thurs. 1:00-2:50 p.m., Room 105, Alexander Music Building

Concert Band

Dr. Derek Shapiro, conductor

The Concert Band, established in Winter 2011, is open to all students in the University. No audition is required for participation. This course is designed for non-music majors wanting to further develop their individual and ensemble skills through presenting concert band literature in rehearsal and performance. Music major participation on secondary performance areas is welcomed and encouraged. Course may be repeated for credit.

Rehearsals (Winter only): Mon. 7–9 p.m., Room 105, Alexander Music Building

Marching Band

Dr. Derek Shapiro, conductor

The EMU Marching Band continues its 124-year history of excellence with its 200 student members performing for all home football games; Homecoming, Band Night and Family Day activities; at exhibitions at area and national marching band festivals and competitions; and travels to one or two away games each year. Membership is open to any university student by audition and field try-out at the annual pre-season Band Camp held in August. For more information about marching band, visit the Marching Band page.

Rehearsals (Fall only): Mon., Wed., Fri. 4:05–6:05 p.m., EMU Marching Band Practice Field

Basketball Band

This all-volunteer organization provides spirited musical entertainment at regular home games and post-season tournament play, including the Mid-American Conference and NCAA Tournaments, in support of the EMU men’s and women’s basketball teams. Consisting primarily of non-music majors, members are selected by audition during the fall semester each year.

Rehearsals (Winter only): Selected Wed. 4–6 p.m., Room 105, Alexander Music Building
