Biography

Born in Chicago, and raised in Skokie, Ill., violist Glenn Mellow studied with Abraham Skernick at Indiana for three years, taking a year off to teach viola in Brazil, play principal viola in the Orquestre Sinfonica de Minas Gerais, and perform with a string quartet. He also studied with Laurence Shapiro of the Fine Arts Quartet and Harold Klatz of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and has attended the Casals Festival in San Juan and the Blossom Festival. Prior to his appointment to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra in September 1980, Mellow served as Principal Viola of the Evansville Philharmonic and the Owensboro (Kentucky) Symphony.

When not playing with the DSO, Mellow is active as a viola teacher and performs chamber music in the Detroit metropolitan area
