Liza Calisesi Maidens, a native of Iowa, holds a Master's degree in sacred music from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey and a Bachelor’s degree in music performance from Central College in Pella, Iowa. While in Princeton, Liza was a Section Leader in the Westminster Symphonic Choir, which performed regularly with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and other world-renowned orchestras in premier concert halls. Liza was the graduate assistance to Joe Miller in 2011/12 and has worked with other great musical leaders such as Amanda Quist, Andrew Megill, Joseph Flummerfelt, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, and Sir. Simon Rattle.
In addition, she was the Director of Music at the Lamington Presbyterian Church in Bedminster, NJ from 2010-2015, where she directed the adult choir, children’s choir, played organ on a historic E. & G.G. Hook and Hastings, and conducted the fine arts chamber series. Likewise, she was the Associate Director of Annual Giving for Westminster Choir College from 2012-2015.
Recently, Liza and her husband, Joel, moved to Michigan where she is on the part-time conducting faculty at Eastern Michigan University and directs EMU Express, a new ensemble in the School of Music & Dance. EMU Express will explore a variety of contemporary music, vocal jazz, pop, folk, barbershop, and other modern forms of vocal chamber music.
In addition to her work at EMU School of Music & Dance, Liza is the Interim Director of Music Ministries at Northminster Presbyterian Church in Troy, MI, and the Assistant Director of the Detroit Concert Choir. She is a member of ACDA, Chorus America, and AGO Ann Arbor Chapter.
