Interests and Expertise
My research is dedicated both to understanding inherent plant responses to the environment and to manipulating those responses through genetic engineering. The goals of my lab are to understand the mechanism of stomatal closure in plants and to use this information to engineer plants with improved performance during drought and under irrigation conditions. In order to accomplish these goals, students in my lab are investigating the role of guard-cell organic acid metabolism in stomatal closure. Other students are engineering Arabidopsis plants for decreased stomatal conductance to water vapor by expressing the enzyme NADP-malic enzyme from a guard cell specific promoter. A second area of study in my lab is to identify genes involved in stomatal development using co-expression analysis.
