Before traveling to EMU

Review your I-20 or DS-2019

Make sure the following items are correct: name, date of birth, country of birth, country of citizenship, major, degree level, English language proficiency (on I-20) and finances

Activate your my.emich account

Sign up for UNITED International Student Orientation Attendance is mandatory.

Sign up for Immigration Check-in This will allow OIS to register you in the U.S. immigration system. Attendance is mandatory.


To live on campus, submit an application to the Housing Office at No temporary housing is available on campus. You must stay in a hotel if you do not have housing arrangements when you arrive.

Health insurance and vaccines

  •   You will automatically receive Eastern Michigan University Health Insurance when  you register for classes. More information is available at

    Attend Immigration Check-in

    Registration is at Bring your documents and New Student Information Sheet. This will allow OIS to register you in the U.S. immigration system. If you do not attend, you are at risk of your immigration record being terminated and returning home.
