The Bachelor of Business Administration in Accounting and Master of Science in Tax Consulting is a combined 150 credit hour program to develop tax professionals who are prepared to serve in the public and private sectors with a broad understanding of compliance, planning, and policy elements of tax practice, who are highly skilled in the technological advances in the tax environment, and who are committed to the ethical and legal standards that govern the practice of tax.

The undergraduate courses are offered primarily in-person/hybrid and may also occasionally be offered online.

Graduates of the program will:

  • Have knowledge and skills needed to identify, measure, collect, analyze, and communicate economic information
  • Possess the ability to make informed judgments and decisions in various organizations and outside users of accounting information
  • Understand the use of technical aspects of tax planning, tax compliance, tax policy, and the legal and ethical issues governing tax practice.

The Accounting, Finance, and Information Systems Department offers the graduate portion of the program Hyflex in a synchronous format using current technology. Thus, online students can access the same course media, materials, discussions, etc., as if in the classroom. In addition, the faculty records class meetings enabling students to revisit lectures as often as necessary while enrolled in each course.

The admission process is the first step to earning your BBA + MS in Accounting and Tax Consulting program online. Be sure to review all admission requirements, what additional materials you should send and where you need to send them.

Admission Requirements:

  • A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
  • A written statement of personal goals
  • An interview with the program advisor
  • Completion of 90 hours of undergraduate coursework, including General Education, ACC 340 Intermediate Accounting, and College of Business Admission Criteria, as described below:

  • BBA + MS in Accounting and Tax Consulting Online Admission Requirements Expand dropdown
    • Students seeking admission to any program in the College of Business must complete 56 credit hours of coursework, including the courses listed below. In addition, students must complete the foundation courses for admission to the College of Business with a minimum earned grade of C- (C required for transfer courses) in each. Students must also have an EMU GPA of at least 2.50.
    • Graduate: Applicants must have a minimum cumulative undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be previously admitted to the undergraduate portion of the combined program.
    • Applicants must confirm with their advisor that they have completed enough undergraduate credits before applying to the graduate portion of the program. A student must complete a minimum of 120 credit hours before being fully admitted to the graduate portion of the program.

      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      Use and development of financial information about economic organizations, with special emphasis on the use of financial statements and their creation in the business decision-making and reporting process.
    • ACC 241: Principles of Managerial Accounting Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      Use and development of accounting information in managerial settings to achieve managerial goals. Use of managerial accounting tools such as budgets and cost analysis in typical business environments.
    • COB 200L4: Introduction to Business Expand dropdown
      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      This course is designed to provide students with an understanding of the business professions, knowledge of business disciplines and to begin assessment and development of skills important for effectiveness in business as an individual and a member of a work team. At the end of this course, students will have developed an understanding of how the different business disciplines operate and are interrelated. Students will have developed a career objective and have had an opportunity to learn, practice and develop interpersonal communication, and group and personal effectiveness skills. Both students who have decided on a major within the College of Business and those who are undecided about their major are welcome in this course.

      This course covers concepts, tools, and problem-solving techniques in business information systems. The main topics of this course are: IT infrastructure, data communications and network, data management, electronic business, strategic information systems such as ERP, CRM, and SCM, the role of information systems in business processes, security, impact of IS on society, and business applications using Microsoft Office.

      The judicial system and legal procedure, crimes and torts, contractual arrangements, sales of goods and other transactions under the Uniform Commercial Code.

      This course is a study of principles, elements, and practices underlying effective business communication. The course focuses on approaches for planning, creating, and transmitting business information within a variety of business situations found in the global marketplace.

      An introduction to the use of inferential statistics in making business decisions, emphasizing model building, real-world data sets, and statistical software. Topics include: one and two sample confidence intervals and hypothesis tests, ANOVA, chi-square tests and simple and multiple regression. The course focus is on business applications using real world data.

      Duration: 7.5 weeks
      Credit Hours: 3
      Concepts of statistics and applications to business decisions. Elements of probability, random samples, descriptive statistics, sampling distributions, point and interval estimation, hypothesis testing, chi-square analysis and regression and correlation analysis. The course focus is on business applications using real-world data.
