Within the Department

Visiting Professor of Physics

The Eastern Michigan University Depart­ment of Physics and Astronomy is inviting applications for a full-time, one-year visiting professorship, beginning August 2023. Eastern Michigan University is located in southeastern Michigan and boasts a vibrant and dynamic community. The Department of Physics and Astronomy is committed to maintaining a diverse and inclusive environment that supports excellence in education. The Department is housed in a recently renovated building with expansive research space, a machine shop and collaborative work environments.

Responsibilities of this one-year position include teaching a range of undergraduate and graduate physics courses (including graduate optics), supervising students in independent study and working with graduate students conducting research. 

Qualifications: 

●      Ph.D. in physics or applied physics 

●      Evidence of ability or potential to teach upper-level optics

●      Demonstrated commitment to supporting students from diverse backgrounds and identities

The Department currently has research facilities in thin films and surface science, optics, and plasma physics. Teaching commitment is 2-3 courses per semester. This teaching load amounts to approximately 24 contact hours per week, including lectures and office hours. See www.emich.edu/physicsastronomy for more information about courses and the department.

Department Office

The Department usually has a student assistant in the main office to help answer telephone calls, deliver mail, make copies, and perform other tasks.

Undergraduate Teaching Assistants

The Department welcomes experienced, responsible undergraduate students to serve as teaching assistants for laboratory sections in courses like PHY 100 Physics for Elementary Teachers, PHY 101 Physical Science in the Arts, and AST 204 Astronomical Investigations.

Graduate Teaching Assistants

The Department welcomes experienced, responsible graduate students to serve as teaching assistants for laboratory sections in PHY 221 through PHY 224 (introductory physics).

Research Assistants

Undergraduate and graduate research assistantships are occasionally available in faculty research laboratories; please contact the faculty member of interest.

NSF Summer Research

The National Science Foundation (NSF) sponsors several universities and colleges around the nation to provide Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU). Please check the NSF REU website to learn about the large array of research opportunities. Be sure to think ahead and apply during late January and early February, typically after you have taken at least a full year of introductory physics courses (PHY 223 & 224).
